Back before I was cancelled by NAME, I used to post a spreadsheet of the jobs on the NAME job board to the NAME-L mailinglist (before it was also cancelled). Just for a lark, I decided to do it again. So, here it is.
A few notes:
- I do not guarantee accuracy. I took a quick look at each ad. I may have missed something or misread something. You get what you pay for.
- Some places did hourly wages. I calculated the yearly rate on 40 hrs a week, 50 weeks a year. YMMV
- I didn’t go into depth with perqs. There’s a lot of variation, and they can be important.
- I normalized the salaries to “Knoxville Dollars” (KD) because that’s where I live. In other words, a salary of $304,865 in San Diego is the equivalent of $181,273 in Knoxville. The “location cost” number is the normalization factor. A lot of folk don’t think about the cost of living. I used bankrate.com and www.erieri.com as my apps. There’s a fair amount of variation on how costs are weighted, so do your own homework. Also, I couldn’t find every city. In those cases I chose a nearby place. Thus, for instance, McFarland, WI uses Madison, WI cost of living.
- Some offices have better facilities than others — CTs, Neuropath support, etc. I didn’t deal with that.
- Some places had “up to xxx” in their salary but no base, I just put the same number in both upper and lower columns.
- The difference between lower salary and higher salary is a difference in starting salary (e.g. with our without board certification or experience) for others it’s starting versus being there awhile. It was hard to tell the difference, sometimes. Look for yourself.
- I was very disappointed to see that so few offices listed the workload. That was a big issue back in 2020 when I did this last. It should be important now, as well.
- As before, if any of you Chiefs see an error, drop me a line.
Note also that I’m not paying for the high end version of the table plugin (I use TablePress). So, this may not display well on phones. You likely need to look at it using a big screen. Also, note that it scrolls horizontally. There may be multiple pages, so click on the page number at the bottom to move from page to page. You can sort by clicking on the little arrows in the title cells. The average function doesn’t seem to work when the table is imported. I’ll worry about that some other time.
UPDATE, 2 APR 2025: Someone pointed out that I inadvertently left out Little Rock, AR. The ad on the NAME site doesn’t provide the correct salary, but I’ve been told it will range between $300K and $350K. I added it. Because of a problem with me using TablePress (I’m not saying it’s a problem with the plugin since I’m just learning to use it), it didn’t recalculate the averages. So… the averages row is now wrong by a few bucks. I’ll fix it when I figure out how. Or not.
UPDATE 2, 2 APR 2025: Averages fixed.
Enjoy.

Interesting. Overall it seems salaries aren’t keeping up. As you probably know, there is a nationwide “shadow” ME system consisting of locum tenens FPs, diving in and out of understaffed medical examiner offices, making far more money annualized on 4-day stints than they ever could being an employee somewhere on the list.
That’s a good point, but I have some doubts about the money issue. I was going to reply at length here, but it became long, so I’m going to make it a post…
